You can help your child discover their talent themes with the online Clifton Youth StrengthsExplorer. In the Clifton Youth StrengthsExplorer, there are in total 10 emerging talent themes. Today, we cover the talent theme of DEPENDABILITY.
Children with the DEPENDABILITY talent theme loves to be trusted to do things. They will do what they say and compared to other children of the same age, they may appear to be more mature or “adult” because of this dependability. People count on them to live up to their young words.
They love the trust given to them by their friends, parents and others. It is like a reward for being who they are. This trust is often expressed in the form of a chore, an assignment or a responsibility given to them. Naturally, they gravitate towards what is expected of them with greater ownership and commitment than the other children.
Getting praise and rewards for being responsibility makes them feel really good and motivated. It calibrates for them what is going well and what they have done well in.

Here are 3 things that you can do: –
- Ask your child to help you with certain chores around the house. They love to be asked as it is seen as you trusting them to do the important stuff. Give them some independence in letting them do it the way they would. Praise and compliment when they do it right. This help them know they are doing it well.
- Children with the DEPENDABILITY talent theme loves to be responsible for some things. Check in with them and ask what would be some thing in the house, at school or friends that he/she would want to do or take charge. Then help them go achieve that.
- Recognize, trust and affirm your child when they take on responsibilities. Show them what they did well, trust them to do the work on their own and encourage them in the areas where they fail. Help them see that being responsible does not mean doing it alone but to seek help from others like mommy, daddy, teachers or friends.
